Malaya garnet is a very interesting type of Garnet that comes from the Umba valley in Tanzania. The word Malaya actually comes from the Swahili word meaning "outcast" because of the very unique and different colour this gemstone displays. It usually has some form of colour shift in different lighting from and orange stone to a deep red. Malaya Garnet is actually a mixture of Pyrope and Spessartine Garnets. Malaya Garnet is in short supply recently so it is getting hard to find rough material to cut.
